Murder Borrowed Murder Blue
Book Review

If you love snowy weddings, reality TV drama, and layered mysteries, this Murder Borrowed, Murder Blue book review takes a closer look at one of the most entertaining installments in the Wedding Planner Mysteries by Stephanie Blackmoore. Book 3 brings a celebrity Valentine’s Day wedding to Mallory Shepard’s Pennsylvania B&B — along with a corpse that threatens to derail not only the ceremony, but her business.

I gave this one 5 stars. It hooked me quickly and kept a steady pace all the way through. While it can technically be read as a standalone, it absolutely shines more when read in order. The character relationships, especially Mallory’s personal life, carry more weight when you’ve followed the journey from the beginning. I enjoyed this one about the same as the earlier books — which is to say, quite a bit.

The Sleuth:
Organized, Stressed, and Determined

Mallory Shepard continues to be one of my favorite types of cozy sleuths — competent and grounded, but not immune to stress.

She’s organized (as you’d expect from a wedding planner), witty, and determined. In this installment, she feels especially obligated to investigate because the murder happens at her establishment — in her office, no less. This isn’t curiosity pulling her in; it’s responsibility. Her business reputation is on the line.

By Book 3, Mallory is confident in her sleuthing abilities. She doesn’t stumble blindly into danger; she asks questions, observes carefully, and follows threads logically. That maturity makes her feel seasoned without losing her relatability.

If I had one frustration, it would be her hesitancy regarding Garrett and his ex, Adrienne. Instead of openly asking him how he feels, she tiptoes around the situation, creating unnecessary emotional tension. It’s realistic — but I did find myself wishing she’d just have the conversation.

Thankfully, her inner monologue balances that stress with humor, keeping the tone light even when emotions run high.

The Setting:
Snowy Glam Meets Small-Town Cozy

The Pennsylvania B&B setting remains cozy and vivid. You can picture the fireplaces, the guest rooms, the event spaces — especially under a blanket of snow. While the winter weather doesn’t necessarily raise tension in a “snowed-in” sense, it absolutely enhances the cozy factor.

The Valentine’s Day theme grows stronger as the story unfolds. At first, the focus leans toward the high school Winter Ball Mallory is also planning. But once that event concludes, the romantic holiday wedding takes center stage in full glam fashion.

The reality TV angle adds fun drama without overwhelming the story. The pressure of filming the ceremony for the show I Do creates that “the show must go on” energy — even in the face of scandal and tragedy. That constant push forward heightens the stakes in an entertaining way.

The small-town feel is immersive, but this particular installment leans more toward wedding glam than rustic charm — and it works.

Side Characters:
Sisterly Bonds and Spotlight Drama

One of the highlights of this series is the supporting cast.

Garrett and his daughter Summer remain grounding presences in Mallory’s life. Summer, especially, adds warmth to scenes that might otherwise feel heavy.

Mallory’s sister Rachel stands out in this book. Their sisterly bond brings emotional balance to the chaos of event planning and murder investigations. Rachel feels supportive without overshadowing Mallory’s independence.

The celebrity bride, Dakota Craig, also makes an impression. She feels realistic rather than caricatured, which adds credibility to the high-profile wedding plotline.

As for the meddling mother? Completely annoying — in the way that’s clearly intentional. She brings tension and a bit of eye-rolling drama to the festivities.

Overall, the side characters add life and dimension without cluttering the narrative.

The Mystery:
Layered and Comfortably Twisty

This is where the book really shines.

The mystery isn’t just a straightforward murder. It unfolds in layers — including the current killing, a poisoning, a past murder, and multiple scandals bubbling beneath the surface. That depth makes the story feel richer than a simple whodunit.

The tension level sits at moderate. There’s no graphic content, but the stakes feel real. The steady pacing allows each revelation to land properly without rushing the resolution.

I didn’t guess the culprit at all — which I love in a cozy. And yes, the motive was satisfying. When everything comes together, it makes sense in a way that feels earned.

The “show must go on” mentality adds additional urgency. No matter what happens, the cameras are rolling. That pressure cooker environment keeps the energy high and the drama flowing.

Vibes Check:
Romantic Chaos with Scandalous Secrets

This book radiates:

  • Romantic energy
  • Drama-filled tension
  • Past secrets resurfacing
  • Foodie moments
  • Strong sisterly bonds

The tone is romantic, chaotic, and dramatic — with wedding glam taking center stage. Between tasting menus, event prep, and Valentine’s flair, it absolutely delivers on escapism.

It also made me crave everything: cake, cocoa, appetizers — you name it. There’s something about wedding planning in cozy mysteries that amplifies the foodie appeal.

Who Will Enjoy This Book Most?

This story is perfect for:

  • Wedding lovers
  • Reality TV drama fans
  • Readers who enjoy sisterly bond storylines
  • Fans of layered but still cozy mysteries
  • Those who love romantic holiday settings

If you enjoy a competent sleuth balancing business, romance, and scandal — all wrapped in a snowy Valentine’s aesthetic — this will likely hit the mark.

My Final Thoughts:
Murder Borrowed Murder Blue
Book Review

Murder Borrowed, Murder Blue delivers everything I want from a wedding-themed cozy mystery: layered intrigue, emotional tension, charming side characters, and a satisfying resolution.

Mallory continues to grow as both a planner and an amateur detective, even if her romantic hesitations occasionally test my patience. The layered mystery structure, steady pacing, and glamorous Valentine’s backdrop elevate this installment into a standout entry in the series.

I will absolutely continue reading this series. It’s become a comfort-read collection for me — the kind I can return to for equal parts charm and drama.

If your current reading mood calls for snow-dusted romance, reality TV pressure, and a well-plotted mystery with heart, this one is worth adding to your list.
