Series: Tea by the Sea Mysteries
Vibes: Coastal charm, tea shop cozy, foodie mystery, wedding drama, relaxing seaside vibes
In this Trouble Is Brewing book review, I’m taking a closer look at the fifth installment in the Tea by the Sea Mysteries series by Vicki Delany. Set in a charming Cape Cod tearoom, this cozy mystery blends seaside atmosphere, family drama, and a puzzling murder that threatens to derail a wedding before it even begins.
When Lily Roberts hosts a bridal shower at her tearoom, Tea by the Sea, the event starts out like the perfect afternoon of tea and celebration. However, things take a strange and unsettling turn when the bride-to-be opens a disturbing gift that immediately raises questions among the guests. Not long after, tensions between the two families escalate—and when one of the wedding party turns up dead, Lily finds herself once again drawn into a mystery that could shake her peaceful coastal town.
With tea, seaside charm, and plenty of suspects, this installment delivers a cozy mystery that feels both dramatic and comforting at the same time.
Lily Roberts continues to be a delightful cozy mystery sleuth. She’s observant, curious, clever, warm, and incredibly relatable—qualities that make her easy to root for throughout the story.
Although Lily has a natural ability to notice details others miss, she still feels like a reluctant sleuth at heart. She isn’t actively looking to investigate crimes, but when something suspicious happens around her, she can’t help but start putting the pieces together.
Her role as the owner of Tea by the Sea places her right at the center of community life. The tearoom naturally becomes a place where locals gather to chat, celebrate, and occasionally share more information than they intended. Because Lily spends so much time there, she’s perfectly positioned to overhear conversations, observe tensions between guests, and pick up on subtle clues.
Lily also feels motivated by a strong sense of responsibility. Protecting the reputation of her tearoom matters to her, especially when a major event like a bridal shower becomes tied to a murder investigation. She also genuinely cares about the people around her, including the guests staying at her grandmother’s bed and breakfast.
Those emotional connections help drive her determination to understand what really happened.
The Cape Cod setting continues to be one of the highlights of this series.
The town has the kind of cozy coastal charm that instantly makes you want to visit. With its relaxing seaside atmosphere, welcoming businesses, and scenic surroundings, the setting perfectly complements the gentle tone of the mystery.
At the heart of it all is Lily’s tearoom, Tea by the Sea. The tearoom acts as a cozy gathering place for locals and visitors alike, and much of the story unfolds within its walls. Between cups of tea, delicious treats, and lively conversations, it serves as the perfect hub for gossip and social interaction.
Other locations help expand the world of the story as well. Lily’s grandmother runs a charming bed and breakfast where several guests involved in the wedding festivities are staying. Meanwhile, the nearby beach adds to the relaxed coastal atmosphere that defines the town.
Together, these settings create a welcoming backdrop that makes the story feel both comforting and immersive.
The side characters add plenty of personality and tension to the story.
Lily’s grandmother plays a memorable role, bringing both warmth and experience to the story. Her bed and breakfast helps connect many of the visiting characters, giving Lily another window into what’s happening among the wedding guests.
Lily’s best friend Bernadette also contributes to the story, along with her boyfriend, who works as a gardener. Their presence helps reinforce the sense of friendship and community that runs throughout the series.
The two wedding families themselves add another layer of drama. It quickly becomes clear that there’s some underlying history between them, and the mothers-in-law in particular seem to clash frequently. That tension creates plenty of awkward—and sometimes entertaining—moments during the bridal shower.
And of course, no cozy mystery would feel complete without a few animal companions. Lily has a dog, while her grandmother has a cat, and their presence adds an extra layer of charm to the story.
The mystery in this book begins with an unsettling moment during the bridal shower: a disturbing gift that shocks the bride-to-be and leaves everyone wondering who could have sent it.
While that creepy moment sets the tone early on, it ultimately turns out to be unrelated to the murder itself—though it certainly adds to the tension of the opening chapters.
The real mystery begins when one of the wedding guests is found dead, and investigators discover that a bottle of whiskey nearby was laced with a deadly substance.
From there, the story introduces several possible suspects, many of whom had reasons to be angry or frustrated due to the complicated family dynamics surrounding the wedding.
The mystery unfolds with multiple layers, making it engaging to follow as Lily pieces together conversations, clues, and motives.
While I had a good idea of who the killer might be before the final reveal, the motive still caught me by surprise, which made the resolution satisfying.
Despite the dramatic circumstances, the story never loses its cozy tone.
The overall vibe of this book blends several cozy mystery elements beautifully.
The coastal setting gives the story a relaxing atmosphere, while the tearoom environment adds strong foodie cozy appeal with tea, pastries, and social gatherings.
At the same time, the wedding storyline introduces plenty of drama between the families involved, creating tension that keeps the story interesting.
Some of the strongest vibes include:
Together, these elements create a story that feels comforting while still offering an engaging mystery.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries filled with tea, seaside charm, and community drama, this installment is a great choice.
Overall, Trouble Is Brewing is a delightful addition to the Tea by the Sea Mysteries series.
The combination of a cozy tearoom setting, layered mystery, and lively characters makes the story easy to sink into. Lily Roberts continues to be a compelling amateur sleuth, and the growing relationships between the characters add even more depth to the series.
One small note for audiobook listeners is that the recipes included in the print edition aren’t included in the audio version. Still, the descriptions of tea and food throughout the story add plenty of cozy atmosphere.
As the fifth book in the series, this installment also continues to build on the world and relationships established in earlier books, adding new layers to the characters and their community.
With its charming seaside setting, engaging mystery, and cozy tearoom atmosphere, this book was a five-star read for me—and I’m already looking forward to diving into the next installment.
